World After by Susan Ee

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world. When a group of people capture Penryn's sister Paige, thinking she's a monster, the situation ends in a massacre.

Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Fransisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angel's secret plans, where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can't rejoin the angels, can't take thigh rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

The book picks up exactly where Angelfall left off, instantly immersing the reader back into the world of fire, Angel warriors and demon spawn (practically but not really).

This book pairs greatly with the first one, following the storyline and continuing to develop the plots and characters within this world of heaven and hell on Earth.

Just like the fist book, I still don't care for the mother. I still have no idea what her deal is, although I am trying to come up with some sort of conspiracy theory or whatnot, she still as a character does not make a lot of sense. I was hoping I would learn a lot more about her past and how she became the way she is, but there wasn't much revealed anymore so than with the fist book. I figured if we the readers wouldn't learn more about her directly, then Penryn would have some sort of crazy fallout or fight with her to draw out more information. I don't see how Penryn at all can simply let her mom treat her or talk to her the way she does. Although she makes excuses, which granted they make sense, it's insane to me that shes so strong willed and witty yet she can't stand up for herself against her mother who by all means, is CRAZY.

I feel like the pace of this book was a lot slower than the first, and to be honest I skipped over a lot of parts simply to hurry up the process and figure out what happens or is really going on. I feel that this book could have used more of Raffe because he was absent a lot in this book. Even though I understand it was meant to give the reader an opportunity to experience Penryn without him, I felt as I was reading that there wasn't much going on to keep me interested considering how we were left off after the first book.

Also, a lot was left to be desired considering her little sister. If you read the first book you know that her sister was kidnapped by the angels in the very beginning spurring her alliance with Raffe in the first place. I felt a gap for the most part was filled considering the progress of her sister and their reunion, but there was still a lot that left me confused.

Overall I was able to finish it and feel satisfied. I am really looking forward to the next installment in this series because I want to see how the story continues as well as Penryn and Raffe and HOPEFULLY her freaking mother. I just really wish her mom would either get killed off or she finally just freaking explains why she does the stupid crap she does. It seriously bothers me. I want to slap Penryn in the face so hard for her attitude towards her mother (or absence of attitude really).

I definitely still recommend this series to anyone looking for something a bit different. I really do have faith in the concept of this series and I just absolutely love the possibilities that it gives the author as well as the reader to imagine and create and wonder.

If you do decide to take on this book just be aware that you may not get what you ultimately want out of it, but it's still successful as a read.
