Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey

Lenzi hears voices and has visions - gravestones, floods, a boy with steel gray eyes. Her boyfriend, Zak, can't help, and everything keeps getting louder and more intense. Then Lenzi meets Alden, the boy from her dreams, who reveals that she's a reincarnated Speaker - someone who can talk to and help lost souls - and that he has been her Protector for centuries.
Now Lenzi must choose between her life with Zak and the life she is destined to lead with Alden. But time is running out: a malevolent spirit is out to destroy Lenzi, and he will kill her if she doesn't make a decision soon.

You know how they say, never judge a book by it's cover?? Yeah well sheesh, I DO. This cover is pretty cool, and I absolutely love the colors. It stands out on the shelf and it's something that I wanted to pick up and look at. Maybe it's just me, but I hate reading books (especially paperback where you can't remove the cover), that have cheesy, obnoxious covers that honestly, I feel embarrassed for reading! Just trying to clear the air a bit for that one..
But anyways, I really enjoyed this book! It's not everyday where you get books that step into the other supernatural realm besides just vampires, werewolves, or witches. Where's the good old ghost stories huh!? Well here's one!
It's not so much a horror story, so much as it is a forgotten romance in the face of evil. Lenzi is a reincarnated soul seeker person thing...yeah! Pretty much she has the power to speak to wandering souls and help them find their way to the otherside.
Alden is her protector, an assigned person who is with her ALWAYS (meaning through every reincarnation and such) to stand by her side and help her in her duties. Not only that, but he's the one who makes sure that poltergeists and things don't take over her body for their evil means. Only thing is, Aden remembers everything from his past lives with Lenzi, but Lenzi doesn't remember a single thing!
In their past lives, Lenzi went by the name of Rose, and as such her middle name is Rose. Her mother wanted her to be named Rose at the last second before she was born, but thought otherwise seeing at it was so late, so it was her middle name. When Lenzi first meets Alden, he continuously calls her Rose which ticks her off. Not only that, but he keeps telling her about her dreams and what they mean and how he can help her, but she doesn't understand and doesn't trust him!
Thus the story begins. DUN DUN DUUNNNN. Honestly, I've only been into contact with one other book from the young adult section that dealt with ghosts in the storyline, and that was Ruined by Paula Morris. That was published...in the summer of 2010 while this just came out in December! So, with that being said, It's nice for the change in material!
I give this a 4/5. I love the way Lenzi talks. A lot of the time, authors don't keep to how teenagers actually talk, especially with the age that they are meant to be in the story. Lenzi is witty and funny, just like a good couple of friends of mine. The way she speaks is very similar and it surprised me because it was very much true in the ways of todays young generation.
I highly recommend this book! Go get it! RIGHT NOW!
