THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Maas
Two men love her. The whole land fears her. Only she can save them all.
In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.
The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.
Great book!! Great read!! So excited to review this thing!!
First off, I saw this thing on the shelf a while back, and never bought it. Why? I don't know! I just felt like I wanted something else to read, try something a bit different from what I normally get, HOW STUPID. Following my last two books I picked and read, I am so glad I finally got this thing in my possession!
I think Celaena is a badass bizzle. And I mean she can kick ass and take names, but still remain vulnerable and charming when she damn well pleases. I love how rounded she is as a character, she is never monotone and she always has something else to give or show to those she cares to get close to. Although she has a deep sense of rage, hatred and insane bloodlust within her, she can quickly lock it down and turn back to that sweet 18 year girl that she is. It's not as though she is always angry or hellbent on revenge or killing everyone, she just simply has a short fuse. It's great how she hasn't let her career or her past really change her into something evil or monstrous.
The plot line is really interesting, and it's a great difference to what a lot of young adult fiction is focusing on today. Although it has it's dystopian-esque "down with the system" feel to it at times, it never really gets into that and solely focuses on Celaena and her task at hand. Although you know that further into the series, it's all gonna hit the fan and it's gonna go down, for now it simply rests with Celaena, and her two boy toys Dorian and Chaol.
I also really loved how, even though it's a love triangle (go figure), it's really not. It's very uneven, with affection going more so one way, and some affection not even being shown when it comes to the other. It's not like shes bouncing back and forth, or that they are both vying for her attention or love or affection. So that helps keep the story going along without focusing too much time on the two men with her.
There is a lot of intrigue within the story, with a lot of subplots going on that you know will mean something super crazy further into the series. There are hints, and big details that lead you to believe that there's way more going on outside of Celaena and with her as well.
The flow of the writing was great, easy to read, easy to follow, and no unnecessary details or unnecessary moments in time that really prevent the story from progressing. I never felt like "dear god just get on with it". It kept me reading, and it kept me interested. There were even a few times when I would look over at my sister and just give her that stupid smile just so she would ask me what was happening so I could tell her. Multiple times I told her she would like the book as well.
So overall this book is a winner! I loved the story, I loved the progression and the feel of the world and the characters, and I just loved knowing that there is so much that is going to happen in this series I will probably freak the f*** out.
The only downfall to this book is,as it stands on it's own, I would have liked a littttlllee bit more detail when it came to Celaenas past. You only get what she chooses to disclose to those around her which you know, is fine, and enough to keep you satiated, but I wanted MORE. I know it's one of those things whee it's just going to have to wait because all shall be well once you read more into the series but as a book on its own without knowing it was going to continue, a bit more would have been nice to really understand why she is the way she is.
I give this book a 4/5!! Maybe even a 4.5/5!!
WHATEVER I LIKED IT AND YOU SHOULD READ IT.
