DEAD WITCH WALKING by Kim Harrison

All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party...and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining-and it's Rachel Morgan's job to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead...or undead.

This novel was actually in my November TBR, but I never got around to really reading it because the beginning kind of threw me off. It wasn't really catchy, I didn't really feel good about Rachel as a character, in fact, she kind of annoyed me, so what I wanted wasn't there so I moved on to other reads. But this time around, same with How To Fall and The Scorch Trials, I continued on and hunkered down to finish this bad boy.

Now I will say it got better as I read...although I was still confused as to what the whole point was. Literally, the whole book spans a few days, and is about Rachel Morgan who quits her job...causing her friend and past partner Ivy (who was a veerrry valuable employee) to quit as well...and in doing so her boss Denon got super pissed and sent out a death warrant for her. He was pissy because in her leaving Ivy left...otherwise he was just fine letting her go on her own because he didn't like her to begin with.

So what made me annoyed with Rachel...was how she was getting so upset over the fact that Denon was hiring people to kill her...she just didn't understand why he was so pissed, and it's like hey! He's pissed because your leaving caused Ivy to leave, he doesn't give two shits about you but he's taking his pissiness out on you regardless. So, in my opinion, she was really thinking way too highly of herself and not seeing the obvious and it kind of made me angry because it dropped down her brownie point average by a bit.

Ok ok ok, moving on, this whole book is literally Rachel trying to 1) not die from assassins like the Fae or Were's, and 2) trying to take down Trent Kalamack who is this big wealthy entrepreneur who is smuggling things so she can get enough money to pay off her contract so Denon stops sending assassins at her.

I think the thing that made me so blah about this whole book is because I was relatively misled from the very beginning, considering the back of the book says NOTHING about what the book actually was about. "Sex appeal" sure she's hot but surprisingly compared to the True Blood series and Anita Blake, there isn't anything sexual happening in this book so no nice raunchy things to wake you up a lil bit because hey, let's be real....those are nice in books like these.

But overall, after finally forgetting anything I thought this book was going to be about and simply reading it for what it was, I can see the charm in it. Rachel can be funny, but I personally like Jenks the best who is her pixy partner in crime. I like how Rachel can be relatable, in that she talks like a normal adult, and you know there's so much more to her than meets the eye, so in future novels, she is going to be a total badass! You know Ivy is hiding something super big...and that will most likely be dealt with in later books, as well as practically everyone around her.

So overall it's a setup book, it gets you ready for the rest of the series but on its own, it was relatively...simple? Mediocre? Not that exciting but good enough to finish? Yeah...I might buy the next one because I can see the potential...I can see myself liking what will happen, but it left me somewhat...meh.

I gave this book a 3/5...we shall see if I buy the next one...I might...I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT IM FEELING RIGHT NOW!
