SOULLESS by Gail Carriger

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.
Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire — and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

Alexia Tarabotti is my spirit animal. Let me just get that straight right here, right now.
This was one of my favorite reads this month because it was so entertaining!!! It honestly surprised me because I was sort of expecting the typical vampire/supernatural hunter type character who is all badass with a sarcastic attitude and sharp wits with lots of sexy heated encounters and bam bam thank you maam interactions blah blah blah. Do you know where I am going with this?? Like...A Rachel Morgan/Anita Blake/Sookie Stackhouse-esque type character but NO. THAT IS NOT ALEXIA.
Rather, Alexia is hilarious in her own unique way, and although she is badass as all hell, it's with an added flourish of British Aristocracy. She has class and manners, and although she has a quick wit and sharp tongue that causes much grief to everyone around her, she's super modest which makes her so interesting for me! It's also what makes this story so great!
Because of her modesty, the raunchy moments are THAT MUCH MORE hilarious to me because she doesn't know how to handle it and it's written as such, so it makes you uncomfortable in the best of ways.
Plus she's just so goddamn sarcastic and teasing to everyone around her it's amazing.
I also really loved her surrounding cast. It almost reminds me of Ouron High School Host Club (if you've ever read/watched that anime/manga) where Lord Maccon is Tamaki and his right-hand man Lyall is like Kyoya.....it's perfect.
In addition to all that I really just like the concept of Alexia being soulless. I'm excited to see what else we can find out about her preternatural state and what exactly it means considering that she has no soul, and vampires and werewolves have too much soul. It's a cool take on the already very full genre of paranormal creature fictions.
I'm super excited to buy the rest of the series once I have the money to do so, I loved the romance, I loved the characters, I love the potential this has and aahhhhh it's just amazing. After I was done reading I texted my friend Shelbe and told her she has to read it, and if I tell Shelbe she needs to read it THAT'S SAYING SOMETHING.
5/5 WOOO!!! Take it!
