THE INHERITANCE by Louisa May Alcott
Set in an English country manor, the story follows the turbulent fortunes of Edith Adelon, an impoverished Italian orphan whose loyalty and beauty win her the patronage of wealthy friends until a jealous rival contrives to rob her of her position. In the locket around her neck, she carries a deep secret about her natural birthright. But an even greater truth lies hidden in Edith's heart - her deep reverence for the kind and noble Lord Percy, the only friend who can save her from the deceitful, envious machinations of Lady Ida.
Alright alright alright!! So to start with this little thing is that it's a small book. It didn't take me long to get through at all, and knowing the type of story it was made it easy to follow along.
This book is very reminiscent of Pride And Prejudice, in that it gives the same feel, and that sense of slow progressing romance that was always there but no one wanted to talk about, and then the drama of those surrounding the protagonist.
So Edith is beautiful, she's humble, she's kind, and quiet and altogether a perfect specimen of womanhood. She was brought into the family as a child when she was left an orphan in Italy, and was meant to be a friend and governess to the daughter of the family, Amy. They treat her with respect and treat her just like a sister although the mother of the family still holds back her affections towards her.
The cousin is Lady Ida, who is malicious and conceited and shallow. Once Lord Percy comes to pay a visit to the household and the family, Ida wants him for herself and does all that she can to do so.
Overall it was a great read. It gave me exactly what I wanted, it had a decent amount of content and drama in it to make it entertaining although it was super short, but it all played out very nicely.
I thought the surrounding cast to Edith was well rounded and did nothing but add to her mystery and overall appeal, and I hated who needed to be hated and loved those who deserved it as well.
To be honest, there's not much to say about it....it was good! If you like Jane Austen then you will like this. 4/5. Good read, nice little snippet :)
