POLTERGEIST by Kat Richardson
Harper Blaine was your average small-time PI until she died-for two minutes. Now Harper is a Greywalker- walking the thin line between the living world and the paranormal realm. And she's discovering that her new abilities are landing her all sorts of "strange" cases.
In the days leading up to Halloween, Harper's been hired by a university research group that's attempting to create an artificial poltergeist. The head researcher suspects someone is faking phenomena, but Harper's investigation reveals something else entirely: They've succeeded.
When one of the group's members is found dead in a brutal and inexplicable fashion, Harper must determine whether the killer is the ghost itself...or someone all too human.
Ok, here we go guys!!
So this is the second book of the Greywalker series, in which it follows Harper as she tries to hunt down this poltergeist who murdered a boy that she knew.
I honestly liked this book, although Harper still gets on my nerves at times...and near the end, I realized more stuff that was missing from this installment which made me pretty sad after it was all read and done.
Now first things first, I love how Harper is getting more used to the Grey and interacting with it, so it allows for more understanding of the paranormal world and how she works and lives in relation to it all. I also really like how Kat Richardson writes, and the overall flow and building of the story and plotline so that it starts off a bit slow but it effectively builds up to the climax so it leaves you content. Another great thing about this second book is how those around her develop more, particularly the character Quinton, who is her jack-of-all-trades contact who helps her out with anything she needs.
The things I didn't like were about Harper herself, who is still generally oblivious and stand-offish when it comes to the Grey. Although she is learning and delving more into the Grey whenever she can, she still won't become aggressive enough with the new world in which she stands, and the possibilities that are literally at her fingertips if she would just utilize them.
Another downfall to the story is the disregard of the crazy character at the end of the first book, who manipulated Harper and her connection to the Grey, who was not at all part of this book and mentioned only once in which case it reminded me of that dude in the first place. He was a big deal in the ending of the first book so it made me kind of mad that he wasn't even in this book, and there was no development with that subplot.
Also, there was no development with there and her supernatural connections within this book, LIKE AT ALL. I feel like ultimately this book was at its core, just a PI mystery. Practically nothing advanced within this story of her surrounding characters and her Grey supernatural connections, or her own supernatural abilities besides the fact that she could do a bit more and was a bit more accepting.
So as much as I enjoyed it, I had to put the whole thing about the Grey on the backburner because literally nothing really happened with it.
It makes me pretty upset because I want this story to pick up and advance and become the badass thing that I know it can be but I'm not sure if it actually does. Considering there are a lot of books in this series I hope that it does, so it makes me want to continue because it could become totally amazing! But I just don't know anymore!!
I gave this book a 3 out of 5 because I still enjoyed it and read through it with ease. It was literally only at the end that I looked back on it and was like....hey...wait a minuttteeee.
Bah!
