REBOOT by Amy Tintera
Five years ago, Wren Connolly died. After 178 minutes, she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, but also less emotional. The longer Reboots are under, the less human they are when they return—making Wren 178 the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, her favorite part of her job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she's ever seen.
As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically still human. His reflexes are too slow, he's always asking pesky questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking Wren out. And yet . . . he's still her newbie. When Callum falls short of Reboot standards, Wren is told to eliminate him.
But the perfect soldier is done taking orders.
I want to say first, that the premise of this book is pretty awesome. The concept is pretty cool because it all focuses around this disease called KDH, that affects the human body in different ways. Ultimately, if you die and have KDH in your system, then you can come back to life as a Reboot in which case you become property of the government and group known as HARC. Each Reboot trains and acts as a runner for the group, where they go and bring in wanted criminals or the sick and dying.
So Wren is the best of HARC being the only one to be dead for so long and then to reboot. She is a badass. She has a limited scale of emotions and she follows orders as they are given to her. When she agrees to train Callum, his humanity starts to wear off on her, causing her to think like a human again rather than just a reboot.
I love the concept, I like the flow of the story and the overall plot line, and I certainly loved the climax and ending to this book. The one thing I didn't like was just...Wren and Callum as a couple.
For one, Wren is 178, although she is "emotionless" she still feels and can understand others feelings and the like. So she's not completely emotionless and I think that's where the story kind of goes wrong to begin with. Once the two interact more, she starts to act more like him...and I would have preferred her to remain the same. She already had feelings, but for her to suddenly start laughing and smiling and giggling when she hasn't done so AT ALL for the past 5 years....it's kind of unrealistic. What I would have preferred was for her to crack small smiles or begin to express her emotion more but not so drastically. If anything, as long as Callum can see the difference and understand how she expresses her emotions and whatnot, then that would be more effective.
It also would have been nice for Callum to get on her level at times. He could be immature and naive about his position and overall life as a reboot, so it would have been pretty cool for him to just mature up and get serious.
But overall, I really enjoyed this book. I never felt bored or let down or unenthusiastic about the material or the events, so it finishes nicely and I'm ready for the next book!
4/5!
