REBEL by Amy Tintera
After coming back from death as Reboots and being trained by HARC as soldiers, Wren and Callum have finally escaped north, where they hope to find a life of freedom. But when they arrive at the Reboot reservation, it isn't what they expected. Under the rule of a bloodthirsty leader, Micah, the Reboots are about to wage an all-out war on the humans. Although Wren's instincts are telling her to set off into the wilderness and leave the battle far behind, Callum is unwilling to let his human family be murdered. When Micah commits the ultimate betrayal, the choice is made for them. But Micah has also made a fatal mistake—he's underestimated Wren and Callum.
The explosive finale to the Reboot duology is full of riveting action and steamy love scenes as Wren and Callum become rebels against their own kind.
So, I finished Reboot a few days ago, and started Rebel this morning around 1130 and just finished it about an hour ago.
I really enjoyed this book, more so than the first! Practically any problems I had regarding the first book were addressed in this book, or worked on, or smoothed over a bit more so it made it seem more fitting.
Now 1, I LOVE the characters added into this book. Particularly Addie, Riley and Micah. Now Riley was the boy who trained Wren when she first became a Reboot, so it was interesting to see that relationship rehash since he disappeared almost a year before. There was a nice sense of camaraderie between the two which was a new facet to see when it came to Wrens emotions and social understanding.
Micah is a great character added into the book because it really causes her to start thinking for herself and those around her. At first, she was only thinking about herself and Callum and getting to safety, but now, she legitimately is faced to think about what she believes is moralistically right for herself as well as those who look up to her.
Addie adds a lot of comic relief and there are some amazing moments when Addie and Wren are together. I had to take notes of each moment with them two alone together because Addie is such a great character, particularly for Wren, and she has some great quotes.
I thought the plot line to this installment was pretty great, as it was the next step up from escaping HARC to then eliminating the threat altogether and saving herself, her friends and those who are just like them.
Another great thing about this book is that it takes the point of view of both Wren and Callum, which does wonders when it comes to understanding them both as characters. I notice with this book there isn't a lot of internal talk, so you only take an outside glimpse at them most of the time so it was nice to finally see what they were seeing and how they reacted to what was happening, particularly with Callum. It offered a lot of insight in the way that Wren works and how her emotions show.
I will say though there were still moments where I felt like Wren was acting a little too much like a love struck teenager considering she is a killing machine who is supposed to have suppressed emotional output. It made me sort of sigh and roll my eyes whenever she would act out too much because I just don't think she should or would act that way considering her Reboot status. But oh well, it didn't happen as much as the first book so that was nice.
I did feel at times like there were multiple moments where the story could have ended and it would have been fine. Almost as though it extended beyond it's natural ending, so by the time the ending did come I was already done. I read and received what I needed and everything that was left was fodder that wasn't necessary but was what the author wanted to add as extras.
Overall I gave this book a 4.5/5! It was better than the first, super great, loved the characters but there were still some moments that I just could not take seriously enough.
